In a world of Science and Technology, where every new research, every new finding, every new invention has a logical reason behind it, there are several explained mysteries in this world which still needs to be cleared up with definite explanation. Machu Picchu brings with itself the never ending theories, the unsolved mysteries and all the open-ended questions that will probably never achieve answered.Who built Machu Picchu and why? How did they manage to move and place such enormous blocks? And most importantly, why was it abandoned? This ancient city looks like a dream and reality exceeds the imagination.
Named one of the seven wonders of the world in 2007, this place stands more than 7000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains. A symbol of the Incan Empire, Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
This place would have still been a lost land amidst the thick green forests of Peru, if a young local farmer, Agustin Lizarraga wouldn’t have dared to visit the old and ancient ruins way back in 1900s. It was only when the American explorer, Hiram Bingham, a Yale University Professor was told by the peasant Lizarraga of the existence of the Inca citadel, lost in the mountain.
This is just where all of the mystery unfolds. The bizarring yet magnificent ruins of this city, would have been destroyed by the Spanish emperors, only if it wasn’t a hidden location.
There are many theories as to why this place was built, what purpose it served.
Some call it an astronomical observatory, as its sacred Intihuatana stone accurately indicates the two equinoxes. Twice a year, the sun sits directly over the stone creating no shadow. Some even call it to be a then military defense position. It is also believed that it was the ideal resting place of the Inca, and could have been a graveyard of women, real virgin.Well, imaginations and curiosity never ceases to exist.
As year passes by, no doubt our researchers and explorers will shed their blood and sweat in finding the real reason behind this lost city. But just think of those days, when technology was totally obsolete, when communication was hard, the Incas built this lost city. With a history hazier than the clouds, with secrets all around her walls, the truth behind Machu Picchu’s reign, establishment, construction and the sudden abandonment, unfortunately fades with each passing generation.
